Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her family moved to Buffalo, New York, soon after her birth. She began music at a young age, in her father's church. She began making secular music when she was eighteen years old. Her first single was "Today I Sung the Blues," and it reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B chart. She performed and recorded many different genres including jazz, blues, doo-wop, and R&B. She earned her first two Grammy awards in 1968 for her single "Respect." She has earned a total of 18 Grammy awards, 2 honorary Grammy awards, and a Grammy Legend Award, as well as many others. One of her most famous singles is
"Respect".
